Our Philosophy

Here at Sparrows Early Learning Centre, tamariki (children) are at the heart of all we do.

We provide a welcoming, true mixed-age learning environment. Tuakana-teina a Māori concept describing a relationship between an older and younger person resulting in a collaborative learning environment, is one of our main values, and we draw on this through all areas of our environment. We provide equitable experiences for all our learners, nurturing their growth, wellbeing, and sense of belonging.

Through open-ended learning experiences, risk play and drawing on the environment as the third teacher, our small family setting allows for that home-away-from-home and ‘one big whānau’ feel. Whanaungatanga is another strong value of ours, creating reciprocal relationships and working in partnership with whānau to nurture and grow their tamariki.

Our kaiako (teachers) are professional and dedicated individuals who are open to learning and committed to delivering our early childhood curriculum, Te Whāriki, to the tamariki in our care. We foster empathy, compassion, and respectful practice, and value and promote the development of social and emotional competence. As kaiako, we are supporting and guiding the leaders of tomorrow, encouraging them to grow in their confidence, individuality, and connection with others.
